They are certainly not peanuts – It’s certainly a big deal when it comes to snacking on groundnut chikkis. For that matter, including peanuts in a diabetic diet might be one of the best ideas. However, one has to know when to put a full stop.
Yes. This is certainly the case with groundnut chikkis. With their crunchy, crispy, and sweet taste, one cannot get enough of them. It’s a snack for any time of the day and as it melts in the mouth, one tends to crave for more. Unfortunately, this isn’t great for people with diabetes.
While it’s okay to have a groundnut chikki when you feel your sugar levels are low, going on a mission devouring them might not be a great idea.
So what are groundnut chikkis?
Known by many names all over India, groundnut chikkis are a sweet snack that is made from jaggery and peanuts. Roasted peanuts are added to hot jaggery syrup and allowed to harden to form groundnut chikkis.
Groundnut chikkis are an immediate source of carbohydrate and so can be included in a diabetes diet plan only to ward off low sugar levels.
With beneficial ingredients like peanuts and jaggery, groundnut chikkis are a better alternative over many other snacks.
Peanuts
Peanuts have a low glycemic index of 14 and so do not increase the postprandial sugar levels soon. They do pack in a punch with their distinctive flavor and substance in a diabetes diet plan.
Jaggery
Common in the Indian subcontinent, jaggery is loaded with calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, potassium, and zinc. Though jaggery has such a promising nutrition profile, both sugar and jaggery come from sugarcane. Now, that’s the catch. With a high glycemic index of 84.4, jaggery is certainly not a sugar substitute.
So, if you want to indulge in a groundnut chikki, understand that it’s a gamble. If your blood sugar levels are in control and you exercise properly as per your diabetes doctor’s instructions, then you may opt for a small piece of groundnut chikki once in a while, but it’s certainly not a mainstay of your diabetes diet plan.
Note: Do not consume groundnut chikki that have added saccharine, glucose, or any other added sugar.
