Body mass index (BMI) is a general assessment of obesity and overweight. It is a simple calculation that can determine if you are in a healthy weight range for your height.
A person’s BMI is weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meter.
BMI gives an estimate of body fat. It is a useful measure of obesity, and can be an indicator of the health risks that are possible with obesity.
Measuring your waist circumference along with BMI gives you an idea of the possible health risks you have. A waist circumference of 40 inches or more for men, and 35 inches or more for women is associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease. A high waist circumference and a high BMI are certainly indicators of possible risk of type 2 diabetes and heart diseases.
