It is a first generation sulfonylurea medicine that is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This is an oral medication and it lowers the blood sugar levels. It acts by stimulating the pancreas and secreting insulin thereby increasing the insulin production and efficiency. By taking this medication, the pancreas must work more in order to produce more insulin. This drug is not recommended for people with diabetic ketoacidosis. Moreover, it is known to increase the risks of cardiovascular risks. This drug is discontinued in the USA.
