It is an oral medication used for treating type 2 diabetes. It works by blocking enzymes that digest starches in food resulting in slower and lower increase in blood glucose (especially after meals). This drug belongs to the group of medicines known as alpha-glucosidase inhibitors (See: Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors). This medicine is used to reduce high blood sugar levels and improve glycemic control after meals. They act by inhibiting enzyme secretion thereby leading to reduced absorption of carbohydrates.
Side effects of Acarbose:
• Tightness in chest.
• Sudden low blood sugar.
• Stomach pain. Gas, and loose stools.
