Bolus:

Bolus:

Bolus in digestion means is an amount of food that is consumed. It is a ball like mixture of food and saliva that is formed in the mouth while chewing. The bolus is swallowed and it passes through the esophagus for digestion. Bolus in medicine means a quantified amount of medicine that is administered within a specified amount of time. This is done normally in a span of 30 minutes so that the concentration of the medicine in blood is optimal. If the medicine reaches an effective level, the efficacy of the medicine increases. Bolus medicine can be given in the form of intravenous injections, intramuscular injections, subcutaneously, or via inhalation. The route of administration of the bolus medicine depends upon the medicine and the condition. In the case of people with diabetes, a bolus is a dosage of insulin that is fast-acting and is taken with a meal. It is called bolus insulin (See: Bolus insulin). A basal bolus (See: Basal Bolus) is another type of insulin that is taken for long-acting purposes.
