Sepsis is a reaction of the body when it is subject to infections. It can be life-threatening. Generally, the immune system protects us from infections, but when the chemicals of the immune system enter the bloodstream it causes inflammation in the body. It leads to a condition called septic shock and leads to death. This condition is characterized by high fever, increased heartbeat, and infection. In cases of severe sepsis, it can even lead to discolored skin, low platelet count, lowered mental ability, trouble breathing, chills, and ultimately death. Antiseptics are substances that are applied to the affected skin or the tissue in order to prevent infection, and sepsis. They are different from antibiotics, and disinfectants. Common antiseptics include alcohol (ethanol, isopropanol), hydrogen peroxide, iodine, balsam of Peru, polyhexanide, octenidine dihydrochloride, and chlorhexidine gluconate.
