Albuminuria:
The presence of albumin (See: Albumin), a protein found in blood plasma, in the urine is called albuminuria. It is a sign of kidney disease. In a person with healthy kidneys, albumin is filtered and there would be no presence of albumin in the urine. In the case of people whose diabetes is not under control, there is damage to the kidneys and albumin enters the urine stream. So, it is important for people with diabetes to get periodical screening tests for kidney disease with a urine albumin test and a creatinine test. If the urine albumin stays put at a particular level or drops, it means that the treatment plan is working. Reduction of albumin involves medication, reduction of weight, reduction of sodium in diet, and restricting the intake of proteins.
